Should I drink Nettle & Red Raspberry Tea in pregnancy?

Red Raspberry Leaf tea & Nettle tea are two of the main herbs I as a midwife , doula and  Childbirth  educator recommend to all of my expecting mommies as they prepare their body for pregnancy and postpartum.

Herbal tea is a very ancient way that we used to get minerals and nutrients into our bodies to encourage optimal functioning of our hormones and vital organs.

There are many herbs that are useful in pregnancy. However, these two main herbs are the ones I recommend the most and here are the reasons why

Red raspberry leaf and Nettle contains minerals and nutrients that are supportive to the female reproductive organs, in doing so this aids in a healthy and strong uterus, during pregnancy, and in postpartum when you are trying to heal your body after giving birth.

Here are the many benefits to drinking these herbs !

Red raspberry leaf

▫️helps to balance hormones

▫️improves iron store

▫️helps prevent postpartum depression and exhaustion

▫️Helps regrow hair

▫️Enhances breast milk production

▫️Helps prep body for pregnancy

▫️anti-inflammatory and an aptogentic!

Nettle Tea

▫️High in vitamins A, C, K, and some B vitamins.

▫️High in antioxidants and minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium phosphorus, potassium, and sodium.

▫️Helps restore lost nutrients after birth

▫️Helps prevent hemorrhage

▫️Encourages breast milk supply

▫️Prevents leg cramps

For my midwifery clients I recommend drinking 1 cup a day per trimester

Ex: 1 cup in 1st trimester a day , 2 cups a day in 2nd trimester and 3-4 cups a day in the third

Continue to drink these teas in the postpartum period

Not a fan of tea ?

Here is an adapted version of the original recipe my friend Steph Worsenscroft, @yourlittledoula gave me for these teas! It’s SO yummy! And a great way to get your daily tea in !

Nettle, Red RASPBERRY Leaf & Blueberry Infused Tea

Ingredients

🌱1/2 cup Red raspberry tea (loose leaf or tea bags)

🌿1/2 cup Nettle tea ( loose leaf or tea bags)

🫐 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen) 2 lemons 1/2 cup of honey

Instructions

  • Steep 1/2 cup of nettle herbs and RRL in 4 cups of water

  • Then steep 2 Cups of water and 2 Cup of fresh or frozen blueberries for as long as you’d like. The longer you steep the tea the stronger the tea will be. I usually do 10 to 20 minutes or when I feel it’s done

  • Then add 1/3 - 1/2 cup raw honey (depending on how sweet you like it) . If the tea isn’t warm any more you will want to heat up the honey and some of the tea or blueberry water in a pan on low until well dissolved before combining.

  • Juice 2 fresh lemons and add to your blueberry & honey mixture & add this mixture to the tea

  • serve warm or add ice and enjoy !! ☕️
